Signs of progress on our make-ready are being seen across town! In some areas of town DigSafe has been out to mark areas where poles or other supporting structures are scheduled for replacement.

Information about Charlemont Connect make-ready. Make-ready is work to prepare a “path” for the distribution network to run throughout the town. Most of this work is done by the utilities (National Grid and Verizon) to make space on existing utility poles. In some cases, the town may perform make-ready work by installing new underground conduit (e.g. near the town hall or on Hawk Hill Road) or new utility poles (e.g. on the west end of Tower Road) to create a cost-effective path for the distribution network.
Make-ready, the work needed for the utility companies to prepare the poles to support a municipal fiber network, is underway in Charlemont!

Obear Construction has begun work on the Network Equipment Enclosure located in the basement of the Charlemont Town Hall. The room will house the electronics that form the core of the fiber-optic network.

The application for the redesigned railroad crossing at Tower Rd was approved by Pan Am Railroad last week. Make ready work will begin on this section of the distribution network this spring/ summer.

With the receipt of the final National Grid invoice, Charlemont has filed an application for an advance from the EOHED Last-Mile Contingency Fund for approximately $438,000.

Designs for an underground distribution network, which follow the path of the existing electric service, have been approved by the Select Board for Heath Stage Terrace and portions of Hawk Hill Rd.
Comments closedBecause of the high annual cost of leasing aerial space spanning active railroad tracks, Charlemont is redesigning the crossing at the west end of Tower Road to cross at a public way. As part of this rerouting, we have applied to install eight new town-owned utility poles for the fiber along a section on the west end of Tower Road. This will result in substantial long-term savings for the town.

The Town of Charlemont has selected Danek Excavation of Rowe to install exterior conduit and a fiber vault on the town hall grounds in preparation for the municipal fiber-optic network routes to the hub being built in the basement.
