Charlemont has two important construction projects happening this spring – the building of the municipal fiber network and the next phase of the traffic calming work. Broadband team members have been highlighting the risk of having these projects ongoing simultaneously for some time, but these concerns were brought into sharp focus as the initial distribution network build schedule was coming together at the beginning of the new year. Broadband Committee representatives, the Select Board, the Town Administrator, Westfield Gas & Electric (WG&E), DOT project managers, and state officials met and agreed to make every effort to accelerate the village fiber network build ahead of the spring resumption of the traffic calming work. It’s going to be a busy construction season in the village center!

Information about the Charlemont Connect network construction.
The Charlemont Fairgrounds will serve as a construction staging area for the distribution network! Charlemont’s Parks and Recreation Commission has approved the use of the space which the selected contractor, TriWire, requested because of its proximity to the town center and the space available.
Comments closedWestfield Gas and Electric (WG&E) is making good progress installing the racks and optical equipment for the network hub. To ensure that delays were avoided and our equipment was protected from damage, volunteer Trevor Mackie prepared the enclosure in advance of the installation by running a conduit through the Network Equipment Enclosure (NEE) to the electrical panel in the basement of the town hall. This conduit will be used for connecting the planned Emergency Management Department generator slated to provide backup power to the town hall and to the NEE.
Comments closedWondering how much it might cost to connect your home or business to the Charlemont Municipal Fiber Network in the new year? Charlemont Connect has a lookup tool available that will give you an estimate of these costs based on the current design and the subsidies outlined in our Drop Policy.
Comments closedThe installation of the core fiber management equipment that forms the heart of the Charlemont municipal fiber network has begun! Located in the network equipment enclosure in the town hall, the passive racks and optical equipment are being put in place by our partners at Westfield Gas & Electric (WG&E).
Comments closedRepresentatives from Charlemont Broadband and owner’s project manager, Westfield Gas & Electric, met with the selected contractor, TriWire, to kick off the distribution network build! Focusing initially on Charlemont’s railroad and river crossings, the team began with a ride out to assess potential challenges.
Comments closedDanek Excavating and Burke Electric have completed the path preparation make-ready on Warner Hill Road! Underground conduit and two utility poles have been installed on a section of the road to allow the municipal fiber network to bypass a difficult to maintain section of aerial utilities that provides electrical and phone service to residents through the town of Heath.
Comments closedOn November 10, the town received the proceeds from issuing a state house note to finance the construction of the distribution network. If the town achieves a sufficient “take-rate”, above 70%, Charlemont expects to be able to pay for all debt service from the monthly internet charges.
Comments closedFinishing roughly seven weeks ahead of schedule, Verizon has now licensed the use of the utility poles on all seventeen applications to Charlemont’s municipal network! This completion accelerates the next steps in the process: the inspection and remediation of the make-ready work and the relocation of the state’s MBI 1-2-3 middle-mile network fiber.
Comments closedNiles Tree Service has completed the tree trimming needed to wrap up the make-ready path preparation on the west end of Tower Rd! Working with our partners, Westfield Gas & Electric, Charlemont has set new utility poles to provide a fiber path that avoids a costly railroad crossing.
