Volunteers Sought to Staff Election Information Table

Charlemont’s municipal fiber network team is seeking volunteers to staff a broadband information table between 12:45 PM and 5 PM at the Charlemont town elections that run from noon – 7 PM on Tuesday, May 25. If you are able to spend an hour or two outdoors at the town garage handing out information and answering questions about the project, please contact Charlemont Connect.

Whip City Fiber Qualifying Customers Can Access $50/month Federal Emergency Broadband Benefit

Whip City Fiber (WCF), Charlemont’s ISP, is participating in the newly launched federal Emergency Broadband Benefit offering up to a $50/month discount on your municipal fiber service for qualifying households! This discount can be used in conjunction with the FCC’s Lifeline program. Emergency Broadband Benefit enrollment will begin on May 12, 2021. The monthly discount will be provided for as long as the program allows. Eligible households can enroll directly through WCF at www.whipcityfiber.com/promo/ebbp.

Network Construction Updates and Drop Resources

Daily construction updates are posted on both the Charlemont Connect website and the home page of the Town of Charlemont website. These indicate where the fiber crews are working on any given day and how many two-person crews are active. Charlemont Connect also offers resources to look up your FSA location, get an estimate of the cost to connect your home or business, and confirm the details of your installation type.

Some WiredWest Refunds Remain Uncollected

Did you support Charlemont’s initial WiredWest effort to bring fiber to town with a $49 pre-subscription? If so, thank you! This early effort helped to estimate the expected take rate for the municipal fiber network and led to a $960,000 EOHED grant for network construction. Since Charlemont has selected Westfield Gas & Electric as our Internet Service Provider (ISP), WiredWest has been returning these deposits with interest to pre-subscribers from town.

TV and Digital Programming over the Internet

A common question from potential subscribers is “Will you be offering TV?”. Whip City Fiber does not provide television programming but many customers will subscribe to one or more streaming services (YouTube TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc.) for watching TV, movies, and sports over a broadband internet connection. Broadband Committee member, Mary Ellen Banks, follows developments in the streaming television space and has written this overview to help subscribers understand these offerings.
