Charlemont reached a milestone this week when 40% of all locations – every rental unit, business, and home- signed up for service! This magic number means that the network is projected to cover the annual costs of operating the network. Thanks to everyone that signed up and welcome to those of you who will be signing up during this ongoing construction period!
The percentage of locations that agree to take service is called the take-rate. If the town achieves a sufficient “take-rate” of about 70%, Charlemont expects to be able to pay for all debt service from the monthly internet charges. At take-rates above 70%, the town can decide whether to lower the cost of service for subscribers or use any excess revenue to offset taxes. Most western Massachusetts fiber towns have met or exceeded this threshold.
All sign-ups during the construction period, which is expected to go through 2021, will receive up to a $1,400 subsidy for each service installation. Locations with underground utilities are encouraged to sign up early to get an installation during the warmer months and ensure access to the subsidies. Encourage your Charlemont friends and neighbors to sign-up today!
