The consultations for locations with underground utilities are winding down. Charlemont homes and businesses must express interest in the municipal fiber service with Whip City Fiber to be contacted for an appointment. Sign-up today to get an underground installation estimate!
Underground installations are a multi-step process and must be done in the warmer months before the ground freezes.
The consultation is the first step. The first consultation is free to the property owner and provides a go/no-go decision point following the consultation. The property owner or a representative over the age of 18 will meet the crew to evaluate the underground path from the MST designated to serve this location to the building to be served. Any existing conduit will be evaluated at that time for use. Dig Safe will be contacted to mark the area indicating the location of underground utilities and the Charlemont Conservation Commission will review the proposed underground path. Finally, if there is payment due in excess of the subsidy, the town will send a request for payment that must be received prior to the start of the construction.
The second step is exterior construction. A team will arrive and prepare the conduit and pull the fiber from the MST through to the home or business and terminate at the NID located on the outside of the house much like a phone box or an electric meter. This does not require that anyone meet the team but notice should be provided.
Finally, for all locations subscribed to a year of service, the interior wiring will be scheduled with the resident once the fiber service area is ‘lit’. This can be done year-round and will require someone over 18 to meet this installation team and confirm the interior installation plan.
