Community Compact Cabinet Municipal Fiber Grant Awarded In Five Town Collaboration

Last updated on June 1, 2022

The fiber towns of Charlemont, Colrain, Heath, Leyden, and Rowe – collectively known as the ‘Northern Ring’- have been awarded a $400,000 Massachusetts Community Compact Cabinet Municipal Fiber Grant to support building an interconnected ‘mesh’ network supporting multiple backhaul paths to significantly improve the resiliency of each participating town!

This opportunity, identified by the town of Leyden with grant preparation led by Colrain, provides funding for the towns working together with our network operator, Whip City Fiber, to build multiple points of interconnection between all five towns, purchase and configure the equipment to smartly route network traffic between the towns in the event of a service disruption, and allow for connections to multiple backhaul providers that provide the connection to the internet backbone.

This grant represents many hours of collaboration by representatives of all five Northern Ring towns, as well as our partners at Whip City Fiber, that will support these communities for many years to come!
