Beta Testing Underway!

Charlemont has begun serving beta customers and testing has begun! A few issues have been identified and are being corrected in the installation process and network operation. As soon as the identified issues are resolved, scheduling for general installations for the first fiber service area will begin.

Network Construction Status Available

Charlemont Connect is has created a network construction status page to allow for an at-a-glance view of the municipal fiber construction in each fiber service area (FSA). The FSAs are linked to a description of the areas of town that are contained in that FSA. The construction stages are linked to a description of each of the steps needed before service is available. Each stage for each FSA will show one of four statuses: Complete, In Progress, Not Started, and Blocked.

FSA 01 Beta Testers Scheduled

The validation of FSA 01 continues to move ahead and Charlemont anticipates acceptance of the network during the week of July 19, barring issues uncovered during the final network acceptance.  Charlemont has selected and Whip City Fiber has scheduled six to eight beta users for installation at the end of next week. These beta testers will ensure the quality of the service and work with Whip City Fiber to correct any identified issues before installation is open to subscribers. The beta phase is expected to be a week to 10 days, moving general installations into early August.

FSA 01 Final Validation in Progress

The first fiber service area (FSA) is in the final validation phase of construction. Once complete, ownership of this FSA will be turned over to Charlemont, and customer installations can begin. There were seven defects turned up in the initial validation review. Splicing teams from TriWire were spotted working in these areas on Saturday!

Testing Complete in First Fiber Service Area!

Charlemont’s first fiber service area, FSA 01, has completed testing and has now moved into the final validation phase! Once our partners at Westfield Gas and Electric validate the testing data, this fiber service area will be turned over to the town to begin in-home installations and provide service to subscribers in July.

Charlemont Voters Affirm Broadband at Annual Town Meeting

At Charlemont’s Annual Town Meeting (ATM) residents unanimously approved the FY 22 Broadband Enterprise Fund operations budget. Charlemont’s MLP Manager, Bob Handsaker, took a moment to thank the broadband committee, town employees, and numerous town volunteers for their contributions to the success of this ongoing multi-year project. Service is expected to begin in July and roll out in roughly two-month intervals through the year.

Construction Moves Into in FSA 02, Splicing Begins in FSA 05

The fourth fiber service area, FSA 02, comprising all of Charlemont west of Zoar Outdoor, began construction last week hanging strand on Route 2 and Legate Hill Rd! Splicing has begun in FSA 05, the second fiber service area scheduled for service. This area consists of the village west of the Federated Church, through Avery Brook Road and the Red Rose motel. Strand is the first phase and splicing is the fourth phase of the six phases needed for distribution network construction in each FSA.

Broadband Status Update for Annual Town Meeting

Charlemont’s Municipal Fiber Network will be serving customers next month! The town is on track to light the first fiber service area in July, serving most of the village and homes along South River Road. This updated project timeline and broadband status update have been prepared for Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, June 12.
